Boys And Their Toys - Preview

Marcus decided to get an early night.

He laid the soldiers on the bedside table, straightening them into rows before flicking the light off and pulling the blankets over his face.

Sometime in the night, he awoke from a dream where his soldiers had been moving as though on a battlefield, with the shouted orders of the General and Captain ringing in his ears. Turning on his beside lamp he blinked in the sudden glare. "Weird dream," he muttered. Then his eyes focused on the soldiers. They were not in the same lines he had left them in. Slowly he sat up and took a cautious look around the room, but all was quiet. Still he didn't sleep till two hours later when the morning light broke through the window.

By the following night he had convinced himself that he had been mistaken and went to bed with only a faint qualm.

After a period of restless sleep he awoke suddenly not knowing what had caused it. He sat up and groped for the lamp switch, but couldn't find it. Heart fluttering, he flailed with both hands, knocking some of the soldiers to the floor as he did so. Suddenly a cold wind blew round him and a voice spoke right in front of his face.

"Where's my soldiers? I want them. Give me back my soldiers!"

Marcus made an inarticulate cry of fear, flung himself out of bed, raced out of his room and took the stairs two at a time. He ran to the kitchen, bolting through the door and ran smack into a person standing just past it. He screeched in fear and backpeddled desperately. The figure reached for him then a smaller one interposed itself and a woman's voice said, "No Argon, I'll handle this."

Then he passed out...
